Games on your old AMD Radeon GPU are about to look way better, according to leak

According to this new gaming GPU rumor, AMD is trying to get FSR 4 working on older RDNA 3 graphics cards, such as the Radeon RX 7800 XT.

AMD is reportedly working on a way to bring its acclaimed FSR 4 upscaling tech to its older GPUs, such as the Radeon RX 7900 range. FSR 4 is currently exclusive to GPUs based on the RDNA 4 architecture, such as the AMD Radeon RX 9070, and it makes games look massively better than with older versions of FSR, thanks to its use of AI.

It isn't just the new 9070 XT review, FSR 4 is a substantial upgrade over FSR 3, resulting in a sharp image with hardly any of the ghosting, blurriness, and horrible digital noise that's clearly visible in games when you use previous versions of FSR.

This latest rumor comes from YouTube tech leaker Moore's Law is Dead (MLID), who isn't always a reliable source, so take this with a grain of salt, but he claims to have spoken to one of his sources who works at AMD and has connections to the team working on FSR 4. This source, as shown in the video below, reportedly said that the people on the FSR 4 team say "we are taking our time to port FSR 4 to RDNA 3 because we realize how important it is that we get this right."

However, it doesn't look as though it's coming in the near future, as the source also says that "I was hoping to have more updates for you about efforts to port FSR 4 to RDNA 3, but unfortunately the people I know working on it had nothing new to say last time I talked to them."

While having more GPUs that FSR 4 would be good for AMD, and especially good for gamers who own these GPUs, the bigger barrier for AMD here is that the tech doesn't work on competitors' graphics cards. Comparatively, all previous versions of FSR would work on any GPU. I've previously called for AMD to open up the tech to make FSR 4 work on Nvidia GPUs, as it could theoretically run on Nvidia's Tensor hardware too.

While some of AMD's last-gen GPUs have matrix AI cores, there's also no AI hardware on any of AMD's Radeon RX 6000 GPUs, even at the high end. AMD could also do with adding an AI-based version of frame gen to the FSR 4 suite, as FSR frame gen can work erratically in some games right now, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, where the frame rate jumps all over the place when you enable it.

Of course, it's also worth bearing in mind that AMD hasn't officially announced that it's working on making FSR 4 work on older GPUs, and that while MLID sometimes hits the nail on the head, he's also dropped the ball on occasion. One example is including a purported AMD presentation slide on the Zen 5 architecture in one of his videos, which later turned out to be a fake produced by X (formerly Twitter) Bionic_Squash.
