An AMD Radeon RX 9080 gaming GPU is reportedly coming, but with a big catch

AMD is reportedly planning to bring out a top-tier gaming laptop GPU with similar specs to the acclaimed Radeon RX 9070 XT desktop card.

We thought that AMD's new RDNA 4 gaming GPU range was going to top out at "9070" when it comes to model numbers, but a new leak claims that there's a new AMD Radeon RX 9080 chip coming. There's a catch, though, which is that the rumored chip's full name is the Radeon RX 9080M, and it's reportedly a laptop GPU. What's more, the core spec looks identical to that of the desktop Radeon RX 9070 XT.

That's a good start, though, as I was really impressed by the performance of the new best graphics card. It looks as though AMD has different plans for the model names of its new laptop gaming GPUs, though, with the new Radeon RX 9080M apparently matching the number of compute units and VRAM capacity of the 9070 XT.

This latest rumor comes from cryptic tech leaker All The Watts!!, who posted some numbers in emoji format in a post on X (formerly Twitter), which look very much like they describe a new range of AMD GPUs aimed at the best gaming laptops.

At the top of the list is the 9080M, which has 64, 16, and 64 after it, which I assume means it has 64 compute units and 16GB of VRAM, while the other 64 could correspond with the number of RT cores in the chip, which are synonymous with the number of compute units – it could alternatively refer to it having 64MB of L3 cache.

Based on what we know about the RDNA 4 architecture, that would mean the Radeon RX 9080M has 4,096 stream processors and 128 AI cores. However, as a mobile GPU, it's going to need to have significantly lower clock speeds than the 9070 XT desktop GPU. My test rig drew 487W from the mains with the 9070 XT installed and running at stock speed, compared to just 369W with the RTX 5070 installed.

Several other mobile chips are also suggested in the post, with the Radeon RX 9070 M XT apparently having 48 compute units (3,072 stream processors) and 12GB of VRAM, while the standard 9070M apparently has 32 compute units (2,048 stream processors) and just 8GB of VRAM, which could be a problem for running some of the latest games with all the eye candy enabled, even at 1080p. A 9070S is also listed with the same core spec, while the Radeon RX 9060M looks as though it has 28 compute units (1,1792 stream processors) and again 8GB of VRAM, as does the 9060S listed underneath it.

As always with rumors, bear in mind that none of the above has been officially confirmed by AMD, so take it with a grain of salt for the moment. If it's true, though, then the Radeon RX 9080M looks like it could be a really good gaming laptop GPU, as long as AMD can control the power draw. The Radeon RX 9070M looks like a bit of a disappointment if it genuinely has that amount of VRAM, however.
