Keep Driving may not look like an RPG, but, mechanically at least, all the staples are there. 'Battles' are turn-based. You build a party of characters, each with individual, unlockable abilities. Like HP, mana, or any of the other fundamental resources in Final Fantasy and Diablo, you need to maintain your engine, watch your tiredness level, and make sure there's enough gas in the tank. This is part of what makes it so special. While it's the music, atmosphere, and dialogue that really make Keep Driving shine, it's still a rich, in-depth role-playing game. Already one of the best games of this year, the new Keep Driving update – and discount – make it irresistible.
It's the early '00s, summer. You're young, carefree, and the proud owner of your first car. While the 'main quest' of RPG by way of a road trip. Picking up a hitchhiker adds a new member to your 'party' – they have their own sub stories and sidequests. You can stop in small towns to do odd jobs, improve your car with modifications and cosmetics, and buff (or debuff) your stats with food, cigarettes, and beer.
'Combat' occurs when you're out on the road; 'enemies' are bad traffic, stray sheep, potholes, and speed cameras, and their 'attacks' make you tired, cause you to burn petrol, or damage your car's engine. You can see which of these stats they're going to target on their next turn and, using your own ability cards, you must try and cancel them all out. If you have more engers in your car, you'll also have more cards to play – but probably extra trash to clean out every time you stop, and more status effects on you as well.

It looks great, it sounds great (there's a particular track, Recluse, by Hotline Miami stalwarts El Huervo, that makes for one of the most affecting moments in gaming in recent years), and it's a blast to play. While it's joyous and warm-hearted, Keep Driving is never twee. It feels authentic. It's the rare example of a game that's been poured straight out from life experience, without any fantasy or magic to dilute the solution.
Already one of the best PC games of 2025, a new update adds controller for Keep Driving. There's also a fresh minigame, new junkyards that you can use to fix and modify your car, and campsites that add another option for resting, recuperating, and hanging out with your hitchhiker pals.
