Take a step back and forget for a second it's not an RTS, and Mechabellum looks like classic Command and Conquer, reimagined with giant, missile-and-laser-equipped robots. Hundreds of units. Explosions everywhere. Total chaos. Gorgeous and grim in equal measure, Mechabellum is spiritually reminiscent of erstwhile hits like Total Annihilation and BattleTech, but plays like a modern autobattler. Boasting great scores, if you haven't played it yet, there's a completely new edition available now, and even a free weekend on the horizon.
Launched back in September, mech games generally, and partly because it feels like an aesthetic homage to PC's golden age, stands apart.
Developer Game River has just announced a new publishing partnership with Dreamhaven, the studio founded by Blizzard legend Mike Morhaime. To mark the occasion, as well as the standard version you can now get Mechabellum Edition, which gives you 18 exclusive skins, various unique avatars, and special emoticons. But if you want to hold out and try the game before you buy, Mechabellum will be part of the Steam Free-to-Play Weekend which runs between Friday April 4 and Tuesday April 8. Game River also says that Mechabellum's 2025 roap is being refined, with new units, specialists, and tech upgrades on the way in coming months.
