Fans of Capcom's Onimusha series may be (not so) patiently waiting for the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword next year, but the wait is about to become much easier thanks to the revival of this old-school classic. 23 years after its initial release, Capcom is releasing a Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny remaster, which boasts higher resolution graphics and modernized controls, while maintaining the gloomy fantasy aesthetic and intense swordplay that made the original so beloved. Thanks to Fanatical, you can now pick up your copy at a serious discount ahead of its Friday, May 23, 2025 release date. In fact, it's the cheapest Onimusha 2 remaster pre-order price we've seen so far.
Released for PlayStation 2 in 2002, best samurai games of all time, blending the dark atmosphere and survival horror elements of Capcom's Resident Evil with slick swordplay.
You play as samurai Jubei Yagyu, out for revenge against cutthroat warlord Nobunaga Oda and his demon army. Jubei's quest sees you slicing and dicing your way across feudal Japan, utilizing his supernatural oni powers to slay the demons and gaining allies along the way.
While there's plenty of sleek samurai swordplay here, there's also a lot of depth to this dark action RPG. Throughout your journey, you can learn more about your allies, who each have their own story arcs and cutscenes, with multiple playthroughs needed to uncover them all. There's also plenty of Resident Evil influence here, with puzzles to solve, useful items (like herbs to restore health) to find, and an assortment of weapons to collect. The overall eerie perspective and fixed camera are also undeniably reminiscent of classic Resident Evil.

Until now, Onimusha 2 has been pretty difficult to play, as it was only released on PlayStation 2. So, if you didn't have yours still kicking about, you were out of luck. Fortunately, the remaster means that's no longer a problem, and we'll even benefit from higher resolution graphics, modernized controls, mini games, and quality-of-life features like auto-save and easy weapon switching. For those after a serious challenge, there's a new Hell mode difficulty, which is even more savage than permadeath mode, ending the game as soon as you take one strike – never mind dying.
Whether you're after some good old-fashioned nostalgia or want to experience this classic for the first time, you can secure your pre-order for a discount. Fanatical is offering 18% off Onimusha 2 remaster pre-orders, dropping the usual $29.99 / £24.99 to $24.59 / £20.49 – the cheapest pre-order price we're seeing right now.
