Ex Star Wars Battlefront 2 dev lends to rising calls for a sequel

An ex DICE developer remarks that he and his former colleagues would like to “get the gang back together” to make Star Wars Battlefront 3.

Star Wars Battlefront 3 has long felt as far out of reach as fellow theoretical third entries such as Half-Life 3. The original Pandemic and Lucasarts games only managed a pair, and EA's Battlefront 2 was met with a mixed reception at launch thanks to its microtransaction model. Post-launch from EA and DICE, however, took great strides to improve it, and it now holds an 87% positive Steam rating. As player counts soar in the wake of Andor Season 2, a former developer says his team "want to get the gang back together" to make Battlefront 3.

Former DICE developer Mats Holm, who worked as a live producer on space game's dramatic Steam player count climb, its rise up the top-selling list on the Playstation Store, the success of Andor Season 2, and the ongoing Fortnite crossover event.

In the wake of all this attention, Holm comments that he would still like to return to the series, adding, "Having heard around my group of ex colleagues, we want to get the gang back together." He also responds to a claim that the game recently hit an overall peak of more than 160,000 players by stating, "The size is about right, we hit those numbers during [the launch of] celebration edition. And Episode 9 made us sur Battlefield in many KPIs [Key Performance Indicators, various statistics used to track the success of a project]."

Holm, however, cautions that there's nothing on the cards for now. In other responses, he adds that "no-one has reached out" to him, its that "it would be a weird action by DICE, asking former employees to come back," and says, "I don't expect Battlefront 3 to be announced at the end of this rally." His current suggestion is for the team to test the waters with a remaster first, and then consider a new game if that proves successful.

Nevertheless, it's one more reminder that interest in Battlefront has returned – and enough talk could certainly lead the people capable of making such decisions to consider whether some manner of comeback might be worthwhile. For now, however, it's mere speculation. What I can say for certain is that, if you fancy a few rounds of Battlefront 2 right now, you'll certainly have plenty of company.
